Pinot Noir "Cote de Nuits Villages" 2018

From a densely planted but still very low yield vineyard, this is a beautiful expression of the darkness and delicacy that embody the Pinot Noir of the Côte de Nuits. This is an exquisitely balanced wine, with red and black fruit and licorice playing against each other alongside a touch of floral character we associate with the region. Very ageable but drinks well now with a short decant. 100% Pinot Noir. Red and black cherries, licorice, pepper, mint and cloves on the nose. Smoky ruby robe. The open is tart boysenberry, with the cloves, licorice and mint, along with some violets coming in on the mid-palate and finish. Dense without being heavy, dark without being bitter, a great study in the contradictions of well-made Pinot Noir.

The Story

Based in the northern part of Burgundy, in the Côte de Nuits, the Domaine has been in one family since the rule of Louis XIV and has been passed from mother to daughter for six generations. It is currently run by Hélène Michaut, who took it over from her mother in 2009, and has been working on modernizing production since she bought a new winery space in 2014.
