Regarded as one of the top Brunello in the world, it is also the first fully organic certified vineyard in Montalcino. For over 30 years, these vines and soils have been untouched by pesticides. Located in the southeast corner of Montalcino, after 3 decades, this patch of land has become a cradle for grand terroir. Pressed from 100% Sangiovese grapes, in the right hands this native Italian grape is capable of giving an exceptional voice to its terroir. Each grape is hand harvested and then subjected to an additional pass on the sorting table before moving immediately to a gentle pressing. Salicutti’s Brunello is elegant, with an almost Burgundian touch. Aged for 33 months in wooden barrels then another 15 months in bottle before going to market.
At just 35 kilometers from the sea, the climate is mild and balanced with soils that store rainwater effectively and return it slowly back to the roots of the vines. The Salicutti property is blessed with remarkable microclimate — one that produces power using the estate’s own groundwater and feeds itself with beehives, a fruit grove and a vegetable garden.
The types of stone and soil is quintessential to the expression of this wine; clay-layered argillite and calcareous sandstone can be found on the Salicutti estate. The soils also include portions of younger stone deposited here through more recent erosion and landslides. Ranging for moderate to high proportions of active limestone, these calcareous soils offer an ideal foundation for the challenges posed by Sangiovese grape growing.
Run by a meticulous family, where everything is done by hand, grapes are carefully hand picked and gently pressed. This Brunello, along with Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo is one of the few truly expressive media for terroir among the grand red wines of the world. Salicutti Brunello is elegant, it has a Burgundian touch, giving exceptional voice to its terroir in Montalcino. It has become a darling of wine critics globally who sing this wines praise!
